Hamza Choudhury confronted furious Leicester City supporters outside the King Power after relegation to League One was confirmed by a 2-2 draw with Hull City on Tuesday night.
“We don’t do things on purpose because we suffer even if some fans think otherwise, I want to say sorry to them, I want to take some responsibility because we are the ones to blame, we are the ones who play, that are out there and we had 44 games and we weren’t good enough.” He told BBC Sport Leicester.
Choudhury moved across to a group of supporters who demanded answers. Amid expletives, the 28-year-old accepted the team had been an embarrassment and said the dressing room was ashamed. He repeatedly told fans the players care.
Harry Winks was booed on when introduced in the second half, and later left the stadium to further jeers. Jordan James emerged to a small round of applause during the exchanges. There was also footage of captain Ricardo Pereira heading straight for his car as criticism continued.
The drop completes a second successive relegation after a season blighted by a points deduction for financial breaches and struggles on the pitch. It is 10 years since the title win, and Leicester now face only their second season in the third tier. The club will host a charity reunion of the 2016 heroes at the end of May, then prepare for trips to Bromley, Burton and MK Dons.
