Flamengo are awaiting CONMEBOL’s ruling on a W.O. against Independiente Medellín that could hand them three points and book a last 16 place with two games to spare. The decision will be taken on a date still to be announced.

According to Globo.com, Article 24.2 of CONMEBOL’s Disciplinary Code stipulates that if a team is deemed responsible for the definitive suspension, cancellation or abandonment of a match, the final score is set by forfeit. In 11-a-side football the opponent is awarded a 3-0 win.

If the W.O. is confirmed, Flamengo would move to 10 points and extend their lead in Group A. Independiente Medellín have four and could still reach 10 by winning their last two against Estudiantes of Argentina and Cusco of Peru. Even if Flamengo lost their remaining two to the same opponents, they could not be overtaken because the first tiebreak this year is head to head, and they won both meetings with the Colombians.

Top spot would not be guaranteed yet because Estudiantes have six and can still get to 12. Flamengo host the Argentinians at the Maracanã on Wednesday 20 May at 21:30 Brasília time, and a draw would secure first place, but only if the W.O. is upheld.

The disciplinary commission will also rule on responsibility for the disturbances and any sanction for the Colombian club. The match was initially suspended then cancelled due to a lack of security guarantees.

After the incident in Colombia, Flamengo travelled directly to Porto Alegre to face Grêmio on Sunday in the Brasileiro. The club has scheduled a Friday news conference with sporting director José Boto and head coach Leonardo Jardim to discuss the case.
