Yasin Ayari scored for Sweden against Tunisia, the country of his father's birth, then chose not to celebrate.
On Sunday night in Monterrey, Mexico, he opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a crisp strike from outside the area in a Group F match, his first World Cup goal. According to L'Équipe, such restraint is uncommon at international level.
The Brighton midfielder, 23, was born in Solna near Stockholm to a Tunisian father and Moroccan mother.
He was approached by Tunisia in 2022 while at AIK Solna but declined, having represented Sweden since the U16s. He was called up a few months later and made his senior debut on 9 January 2023 against Finland, a 2-0 win, before joining Brighton. He now has 22 caps and four goals.
On the eve of the game, Ayari said the choice to represent Sweden had felt straightforward given his birth and youth career there. He added that his father told him the decision was his. He also underlined links to Tunisia and Morocco, recalling many childhood holidays in both.
