The phrase you’ve heard repeated among Chelsea circles a lot this week is “wake up call.”
The idea is that the way that we were so easily outclassed by PSG over two legs in the Champions League will be a demonstration to Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali (both of whom were at the second leg in person) that the model they’re currently pursuing isn’t going to get them where they want.
As part of his Chelsea Confidential column today, Kieran Gill responds that he “hasn’t heard” any whispers of the youth-first project club mentality being changed.
He does remember what Liam Rosenior said in his first interview as Chelsea boss, where the new coach acknowledged the importance of experience in a squad, and said “you’ll see in time” the results of “discussions” he had had with sporting directors.
It’s no guarantee of anything – in fact it’s just wishful thinking to read into it too much. But there’s no denying it suggests that Rosenior thought right from the start that changes were needed.
Chelsea gave Marc Cucurella a wage rise without telling anyone about it – one writer thinks he knows why.
Rosenior’s job at Chelsea looks to be safe despite some unhappiness and some murmurs – but everyone’s job is safe until it isn’t.
