Leeds United Women progressed to the Adobe Women’s FA Cup third round proper this afternoon, following a 3-1 win away in the West Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield Town Women.

Sian Gibrill-Keating opened the scoring in the first half, before Izzy Elliott and Drew Greene’s second half finishes condemned the Terriers to defeat on home turf.

Simon Wood named an unchanged starting XI to the side that narrowly lost out on penalties against West Bromwich Albion Women in the FA WNL Cup, following a two-week break after the York City Ladies clash was postponed.

The Whites got off to a strong start, seeing a flurry of corners well defended, before a loose ball fell to Kath Smith on the edge of the area. Her strike was powerful but well blocked by a Huddersfield defender and the danger was cleared.

The hosts then grew into the game, but with the rain starting the hammer down, neither side were able to get a real hold of the ball, and both goals remained unthreatened.

However, as the game ticked to 24 minutes, Leeds found the opener. A corner to the centre of the box from Chloe Dixon was met by Sian Gibrill-Keating, who redirected the ball past Bethan Davies and into the bottom corner!

As the play slowed down following the opening goal, Leeds continued pushing. The hosts found themselves with more of the ball, but the Whites demonstrated their danger on the counter, as an over-the-top through-ball was played towards Dixon, forcing a vital intervention before the winger could break free at goal.

This was the last chance of the first half, with Marcin Iwanski blowing the whistle to signal for half time moments later.

HALF TIME: Huddersfield Town Women 0-1 Leeds United Women

Both sides came out quickly after the break, with multiple half-chances materialising but with no end product, until the 55th-minute mark.

10 minutes after the restart, Ellie White delivered a teasing free kick from deep into the box, where Elliott was on hand to stretch and make sufficient contact to find the back of the net and put the Whites 2-0 ahead!

United kept on pushing, with Chloe Dixon almost forcing a third goal, delivering a corner right into the goalmouth, but Bethan Davies in the Terriers’ net did well to claim.

Leeds did then find the third goal in the match several minutes later, as Dixon steamed into the box and fired across the face of goal form the byline. Drew Greene was found by the pass and rocketed the ball into the back of the net to further extend the lead!

The hosts did find a consolation in the 84th minute, as Rebecca Beresford found the bottom corner, but this was the last chance of the game and Leeds defended superbly to secure progression to the next round of the cup.

The Whites are back in action a week today, returning to Garforth to face Stockport County Women in FA Women’s National League Division One North action.
