Ander Herrera’s Boca Juniors stint appears to be ending 18 months after his arrival.

According to El Correo, the 36-year-old has decided to cut ties with the Buenos Aires club, with the parting said to be amicable and driven by the player, and the timing of any official announcement is unclear.

Herrera fulfilled a long-held wish to play at La Bombonera in January 2025, joining after terminating his Athletic contract. He relocated to Buenos Aires with his wife and daughters.

He made 18 appearances across the league, domestic cup, the Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup. Injuries hindered his contribution, as in his second spell at San Mamés.

The Bilbao-born midfielder has 440 senior games, having represented Zaragoza, Athletic, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Boca. Some have linked him with a return to Zaragoza, relegated to Primera Federación, but his next move remains uncertain. A farewell cameo at La Romareda alongside former team-mate Ibai Gómez is only a possibility for now.
