Fabio Vieira was sent off for an incident late in his most recent appearance for Hamburger SV against Union Berlin, colliding with Leopold Querfeld after failing to control an aerial ball.

Vieira will be suspended for at least one match, but there was some concern he might also have suffered an injury in the incident. The Arsenal loanee spent a while down on the floor before limping off the pitch assisted by HSV medical staff.

The concern was around Vieira’s knee, but fortunately, Koenigsbrunner Zeitung report that initial investigations indicate there is no serious injury.

It wouldn’t be too outrageous to suggest that Vieira may have been playing up his injury problem a little, knowing he was likely to be sent off. Perhaps he hoped the referee might view the incident more as a coming together than a foul if both players suffered from the clash.

Querfeld was certainly guilty of some playacting himself, rolling around on the floor holding his face, despite replays showing that Vieira only made contact with his shoulder and upper arm.

Vieira was clearly withdrawing his foot after missing the ball, and Querfeld wouldn’t have suffered any more than a bump. But Querfeld’s performance was unnecessary anyway, as the challenge was dangerous enough to warrant a red card.

In the Bundesliga, red-card suspensions are determined on a case-by-case basis. Vieira will be suspended for at least one match, but it’s unclear whether or not the DFB will demand that his absence is extended beyond that.

Hamburg face Mainz on Sunday, October 5th, followed by RB Leipzig on October 18th and Wolfsburg on October 25th. If Vieira’s ban is extended to the three games he’d get in England, he might now end up spending a full month away from the pitch.

The good news is that it doesn’t appear he’ll require much in the way of injury rehabilitation during that time out.
