In recent months, Paris Saint-Germain have shown strong interest in Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich. However, a report from Germany has revealed that a move nearly took place this past summer.

PSG aren’t the only club targeting the experienced midfielder, as Barcelona have also expressed interest in Kimmich, alongside Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah, as part of their plans to strengthen both midfield and defense in 2025.

Kimmich’s situation at Bayern Munich has shifted since Vincent Kompany became head coach. The German midfielder, who can also play right-back, had seemed likely to leave when his contract expires next summer.

Although Kimmich remains at Bayern, he has yet to sign a contract extension. Once the January transfer window opens, he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with any club.

While taking to the media, the 29-year-old broke his silence on where his future stands with Bayern Munich, with only a few months left on his current contract that expires in June 2025.

“We all know what my situation was like eight to 10 weeks ago,” Kimmich said. “One had the feeling: ‘When will Kimmich finally be gone?’ Now things are different again. It’s a very important decision in my career. It should be well thought out. Of course the past plays a role. And the future does as well.”

Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg adds that Kimmich wasn’t pleased that Bayern would have sold him in the summer if the right offer had come along.

Now, as captain of the German national team and a key player at Bayern, he holds all the power in the current negotiations, especially since the club is eager to extend his contract beyond 2025.
