Barcelona’s financial situation does not leave them with many options in terms of signings, but the club have been smart enough to identify and target young talents who are close to exploding onto the big scene.

The ongoing winter transfer window, on that front, has been vital for the Catalans who have strengthened Barça Atletic with some key signings and are looking to get more in before the end of the window.

One such player close to completing the switch is Juwensley Onstein, FC Genk’s prodigal centre-back who was even in attendance for Barcelona’s recent win over FC Copenhagen at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Onstein’s farewell message

Taking to his Instagram late yesterday, the rumoured Barcelona new signing all but confirmed his departure and transfer with a farewell message penned to Genk fans.

“Genk has been an important part of my journey – a place where I learned, fought, made mistakes, and grew, both as a player and as a person,” he began.

“I am truly grateful to everyone who has been part of this path: the staff, my teammates, and all those who believed in me, even during the difficult moments,” he added, signalling that his time with them had come to an end.

“The most important decisions are never the easiest, but I feel that this is the right time to open a new chapter in my career and in my life. Thank you Genk,” he concluded, confirming that he is leaving the club.

With the player making such an open announcement about his transfer, one can expect the official announcement to arrive from both clubs in the coming hours, and for the deal to go through immediately.

Onstein will begin playing for the youth team, but there appears to be little doubt that his signing has been made with greater objectives in mind.

After all, he is a massive defensive talent, and the first team can utilise his services if he can keep up his level and adapt to the Barça way.
