Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has revealed that he would be willing to speak to former Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri if he reached out to him following his exit from Hillsborough.

After months of financial and off-field turmoil, Chansiri put Wednesday and the company through which he owned the stadium into administration last Friday, bringing his turbulent decade-long tenure at the club to an end.

During the final months of Chansiri's tenure, players and staff frequently received their wages late as his financial issues mounted, and as captain of the club, Bannan held a number of calls with the Thai businessman along with long-serving defender Liam Palmer in an attempt to seek answers about the situation, while he also had to deal with questions from concerned team-mates and staff.

Despite being the subject of interest from elsewhere, Bannan signed a new contract with the Owls this summer on a vastly reduced salary, and as well as leading by example off the pitch, the 35-year-old has also been one of his side's shining lights on the pitch, scoring two goals and providing two assists in 14 appearances so far this season.

After going into administration, Wednesday were given a 12-point deduction that leaves them sitting bottom of the Championship table on minus six points, 16 points from safety, but there are already believed to be four or five credible parties showing interest in the club, and a takeover deal could potentially be completed before the end of the year.

Bannan joined Wednesday on a free transfer from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2015, which was the first transfer window of Chansiri's tenure, and the Scot revealed that he would be prepared to speak to the former owner, even though he does not expect a phone call from him any time soon.

“I don't really have a point of contact with him, it was through Lindsey (Hinton, club secretary) that I would speak to him and have Zooms with him," Bannan told The Star.

"I don't know (if he will), but if he wants to speak to me of course I'll speak to him.

"But I'd imagine at the minute he doesn't want to speak to anyone because it's probably a sad time for him as well.

"I have no qualms if he wants to speak to me.

"I've been here for 10 years with him and most of the time he was good for me and my family.

"It would be wrong if I dismissed speaking to him if he reached out."

Barry Bannan's Dejphon Chansiri stance will not be a surprise for Sheffield Wednesday supporters

Chansiri's departure has been greeted by celebration from Wednesday supporters, and Bannan would have more reason to share that feeling than most given the extra burden he has taken on in leading the club through their current crisis.

However, Bannan has conducted himself with class and dignity throughout what has been an incredibly challenging period, often fronting up and communicating with supporters by doing media interviews, as well as listening to the concerns of his team-mates and club staff when their wages did not arrive on time.

It is, therefore, little surprise that Bannan would be willing to have one final conversation with Chansiri out of respect, but it is unclear whether the ex-Owls owner will make contact with any of his former employees after his sudden exit from Hillsborough last week.
