Luis Diaz continues to deliver at the highest level – but no longer for Liverpool. He inspires in Munich, but is sorely missed at Liverpool.

The departure of the Colombian is increasingly becoming a symbol of the downward trend at struggling Liverpool FC. Luis Diaz’s transfer is considered one of the main reasons for the traditional English club’s current fall from grace. According to the Sunday Times, the winger is said to have been pushing for a transfer for a long time – his decision had already been made more than a year before his move to Munich.

According to CaughtOffside, coach Arne Slot had clearly opposed the sale. Internally, he had campaigned for an extension, but the decision was not made. „It was a sad day,“ Slot commented on the departure. Sporting director Richard Hughes is said to have pushed through the transfer. According to the report, he saw no point in making Diaz a new top offer.

Since his transfer in the summer, Diaz has developed into a difference-maker at FC Bayern in record time. Most recently, he set up the 1:1 against FC St. Pauli only when he fell and scored the lead with his head in stoppage time. Coach Vincent Kompany was delighted: „Lucho has a kind of ‚chaotic creativity‘. He can always create something in chaos […] He lifted his head even though he was on the ground and played a great pass.“

Christoph Freund also praised the attacking star after the game: „He’s a top transfer for us. His quality is really good for us. When things get difficult, he goes the extra mile. He’s an extremely important player for us.“ With twelve goals and six assists in all competitions, Diaz has proven his class on numerous occasions.

At Liverpool, however, it is clear how painful his loss really is. Ten defeats, a disappointing eighth place in the Premier League and a bitter 4-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League speak for themselves. At least the Reds were able to celebrate another success on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win at West Ham. Nevertheless, neither Florian Wirtz nor Alexander Isak have been able to fill the Diaz gap so far. What is a direct hit in Munich is becoming a bitter void at Anfield Road.
