Becky Langley helped power the charge of women’s football in the North East with her six years in charge of Newcastle United. From part-time beginnings to professional status and Championship football, she built one of the most inspiring projects in the English game.
Her departure in October 2025 may have come suddenly, but her legacy is undeniable — and her next move could be just as significant.
When Langley took over in 2019, Newcastle United Women were operating independently from the men’s club, training during evenings and juggling work with football. She quickly set out to change that.
Her leadership focused on professionalism, standards and belief. Within two seasons, she guided Newcastle to silverware in the Bluefin Sport’s Women’s Cup and then back-to-back promotions. Climbing from Division One North to the Barclays Women’s Championship.
The turning point came in 2022, when Newcastle United’s new owners brought the women’s team under full club ownership. Langley embraced the shift, championing investment, better facilities and a push for full-time status.
By 2023, her side became the first third-tier team in England to go fully professional. Crowds of more than 20,000 began attending games at St James’ Park — which was proof Langley had built a movement as well as a team.
Despite Langley’s success, football’s progress rarely allows time for reflection. A slow start to the 2025/26 season, with the Magpies sitting ninth in the WSL2, led to Langley’s dismissal.
The club thanked her for her ‘significant role in the rise of Newcastle United Women’. Meanwhile, supporters expressed shock and frustration online. For many fans, Langley represented the club’s identity and ambition in the women’s game.
At just 30 years old, she departs having achieved more than most coaches manage in a lifetime. She also leaves Newcastle’s women’s team in a far stronger position than she found it.
Langley’s track record of building from the ground up makes her an ideal fit for an ambitious club seeking growth and professionalisation. Here’s what could be next for Langley:
Whatever direction she chooses, Langley’s energy, modern coaching style and vision make her one of the most promising figures in English Women’s Football.
With Langley’s departure, Newcastle Women will now be looking for a new head coach to continue the club’s rapid progress. Interim manager Claire Ditchburn has already stepped in, bringing valuable experience from spells at Durham, Everton and Manchester City’s academy setup. Her understanding of the women’s game and familiarity with the squad could make her a strong contender for the role on a permanent basis.
However, with the club’s growing ambition and professional structure under Director of Women’s Football Grace Williams, it’s likely that Newcastle will explore external options too. The next appointment will need to match the club’s vision. Someone capable of building on Langley’s foundations, driving the team toward the Women’s Super League, and maintain the momentum that has made Newcastle one of the most exciting names in Women’s Football.
Becky Langley’s era at Newcastle United Women will be remembered for the transformation. She turned part-time players into professionals, took the club into the Championship, and inspired a new generation of fans. Her story is proof that ambition, culture and leadership can change the course of a football club.
Langley’s time at Newcastle may have ended, but her journey in the game is far from over. The next chapter, whatever unfolds, promises to be just as exciting.
