Bruno Fernandes reached two “massive milestones” for Man Utd during Saturday’s win over Chelsea in the Premier League.

The Portuguese playmaker opened the scoring in a manic first half which saw Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez sent off and Enzo Maresca make the fastest three substitutions in Premier League history.

Casemiro doubled the host’s lead before getting himself sent off deep into first-half added time. Trevoh Chalobah pulled one back in the 80th minute, but the Red Devils held on for three vital points.

The opener was the 100th goal Fernandes has scored for Man Utd, on his 200th appearance no less. But the 31-year-old reacted to the feat with humility in his post-match comments.

“Every goal is important, doesn’t matter the moment,” he told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“Big moment for me to reach that milestone for a massive club, I won’t hide from that. If I can get more goals to help the team that’s what matters the most.”

Speaking to BBC Sport, Fernandes said: “Obviously I’m very proud of that, two massive milestones. Not something I was aiming for. I just aimed to play the next game.”

It was a much needed victory for Man Utd, who had only won eight times in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim prior to this weekend.

Fernandes continued: “You want to perform but at the end of the day what matters is points. We haven’t been getting the points we wanted.

“At the end of the game we were very strong in defending our box and putting them in positions of crossing.

“We got the [Chelsea’s] red card because our mentality was starting the game so strong. The players have to run behind whenever Ben (Sesko) goes for the ball and that’s what Bryan (Mbeumo) did.”

Casemiro’s sending off had the potential to derail what was their most impressive performance of the season thus far, but they held Chelsea at arm’s length, limiting them to just three shots in the second half.

“It didn’t change anything,” the Man Utd captain added. “We wanted to close the middle. Without Delap who makes the runs for the team, Joao Pedro wants to link up.

“We gave them the chance to go down the side and then close them with our wing-backs. Our centre-backs were very good to defend the box.”
