Manchester United edged Chelsea 2-1 at a rain-soaked Old Trafford in one of the most frantic games of the season so far.

The chaos began inside five minutes when Chelsea keeper Robert Sánchez clattered into Bryan Mbeumo outside the box and was sent off. Enzo Maresca had to throw on stand-in keeper Filip Jorgensen and reshuffle his side, but United quickly took advantage.

Bruno Fernandes, marking his 200th Premier League appearance, grabbed his 100th United goal by glancing in Patrick Dorgu’s header, before Casemiro bundled in from a corner to make it 2-0.

Yet the Brazilian’s night soured just before half-time, picking up a second yellow for hauling down Andrey Santos. With both sides down to ten, the game was wide open again.

The Blues had more of the ball after the break, pushing United back in the heavy rain. João Pedro saw a huge chance snuffed out by Matthijs de Ligt, and Wesley Fofana had a strike ruled out for offside.

They finally broke through when Reece James delivered a superb cross for Trevoh Chalobah to head home late on.

United were left hanging on in stoppage time as Chelsea piled forward, but Altay Bayindir and his defence survived the scramble.

The win meant that Chelsea’s winless run at Old Trafford stretched to over a decade, their last victory coming in 2013 during Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge.

Next up is a trip to Brentford, where United will look to record back-to-back league wins for the first time under Ruben Amorim.
