Cedric Kaze ponders big surprise over Baartman: What's next for the Kaizer Chiefs star?
Amidst the ongoing process of integrating a host of new signings, Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has outlined a patient, process-driven approach that could see young striker Luke Baartman begin his journey with the club's reserve side.
The midweek match offered a glimpse into the team's evolving hierarchy. While new arrival Etiosa Ighodaro earned his first start, and Asanele Velebayi and Lebohang Maboe found spots on the bench, several other fresh faces, including Luke Baartman, were notable absentees from the matchday squad.
Kaze addressed the situation by emphasizing the sheer scale of the squad and the necessity of a structured integration process. With a pool of 34 players at his disposal, he explained that understanding the team's tactical philosophy is paramount. He shed particular light on Baartman's unique circumstances, noting the striker's delayed registration, subsequent participation in the U20 World Cup, and missed pre-season, which have collectively cost him two crucial months of preparation and assimilation.
This adherence to process, Kaze elaborated, is why a player like Velebayi—who consistently trained with the squad—was selected ahead of Baartman for a spot on the bench. The coach affirmed his belief in a meritocratic system, assuring that every player will eventually get their opportunity, but performance remains the ultimate decider.
When pressed specifically on the possibility of Baartman featuring for the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) team, Kaze confirmed the technical team's consideration of that very option. He acknowledged that such a move would not only aid the player's development and match fitness but also serve to strengthen the club's reserve side.
As the team shifts its focus to a crucial CAF Confederation Cup qualifier against AS Simba, the pathway for each new signing is becoming clear, with individual timelines tailored to their readiness and the coach's unwavering belief in a methodical process.
