The UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw has produced a series of blockbuster ties, headlined by holders Paris Saint-Germain seeking revenge against Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have been handed a massive showdown against Barcelona, a rematch of their group-stage meeting.

Elsewhere, Manchester City will once again lock horns with their modern European arch-nemesis, Real Madrid.

And that is only the beginning of what should be an exciting round of knockout games on March 10/11 and March 17/18.

Chelsea vs PSG: A statement tie

Chelsea take on the reigning champions PSG just as the Parisians are beginning to find their feet after a difficult start to the season.

The French side is desperate for redemption on the grandest stage after losing the Club World Cup final to Chelsea. Even manager Luis Enrique wants Chelsea.

However, this Chelsea side is full of surprises. They defied the odds to clinch that title in the United States and will be eager to repeat the trick.

Chelsea travel to PSG on March 11 before the second leg at Stamford Bridge a week later on March 17. The battle promises to be one of the ties of the round.

City vs Madrid: Familiar foes

If there is one fixture that now feels like a Champions League tradition, it is City against Real Madrid.

The two clubs have defined recent editions of the competition, trading blows in epic knockout clashes.

Once again, Pep Guardiola’s side must navigate the ultimate European specialists to progress.

Should City advance, they will meet either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the quarter-finals, hardly a gentle reward for overcoming Madrid.

Newcastle’s dream draw

For Newcastle supporters, this is what Champions League nights are about. Barcelona at St James’ Park will evoke memories of famous European evenings from decades past.

Eddie Howe’s side have grown into continental competitors, but facing the five-time winners represents their sternest test yet.

The Geordies have already lost to Barca in the group stage and will be determined to make amends.

Intriguingly, Newcastle sit in the same half of the draw as Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona, raising the possibility of an all-English semi-final.

Arsenal’s calculated path

Premier League leaders Arsenal were paired with Bayer Leverkusen, a technically gifted and tactically fluid but struggling opponent.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will fancy their chances.

Arsenal are one of the strongest teams in Europe and will be eyeing a deep run into the tournament.

If Arsenal progress, they will face either surprise package Bodø/Glimt or Sporting CP in the quarter-finals.

Bodø/Glimt have already stunned Europe by eliminating 2023’s finalists Inter Milan, proving they are no fairytale act, but on paper, this represents one of the more navigable routes.

Still, lurking in Arsenal’s half are Newcastle, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid as they bid to reach the final in Budapest.

Liverpool’s delicate balance

Liverpool were drawn against Galatasaray, a tie that will demand composure in a hostile atmosphere. European nights in Istanbul are rarely comfortable.

The Reds have already lost in Turkey, with Victor Osimhen‘s penalty deciding an enthralling match.

However, over two legs, things will be vastly different.

The Merseysiders are in a better place, performance-wise, than earlier this season and will take the game to Gala.

Should Liverpool progress, they will face the winners of Chelsea vs PSG in the quarter-finals. The margin for error is slim. The prize is potentially enormous.

Tottenham vs Atletico Madrid: Style clash under the lights

For Tottenham Hotspur, Atletico Madrid bring knockout pedigree, defensive steel and the kind of game management that has become synonymous with Diego Simeone’s European campaigns.

They are experts at turning ties into tactical arm-wrestles.

Spurs, by contrast, thrive on tempo, width and attacking incision.

The key question will be whether Tottenham can impose their rhythm over two legs or whether Atletico succeed in dragging the contest into the trenches.

The latter seems more likely.
