The Cityzens open the 2025/2026 campaign with a game against the Barclays Women’s Super League champions at Stamford Bridge.
The fixture provides arguably the most difficult task for Manchester City but new boss Jeglertz is viewing the occasion as a great opportunity for his side.
“It’s the biggest opportunity because we are starting against the team that has won the league a few years-in-a-row,” Jeglertz said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “It’ll also give us an idea of where we are because we think we are ready going and playing that game.
“It’s just a great opportunity to see the level where the best team have been and where we are right now. It gives me and the players an idea of where we are and where we need to improve.”
Manchester City faced Chelsea in four consecutive matches in the second half of last season. Jeglertz watched some of those games and believes that there is a benefit in reviewing last season’s contests.
He said “Yeah, I think so, [it’s beneficial to review previous games]. I remember watching many of the games in spring on the TV, so I have quite a clear picture. City are a little bit different today but I can also definitely learn from what they did during those games and the challenging part.”
The 2024/2025 campaign saw Chelsea enjoy an invincible year. The Blues won 19 and drew three of their 22 league matches. Jeglertz says that the aim is for Manchester City to also develop that winning habit once again.
He said “I’m hoping that we can also create that at Manchester City. The club have had that before and that is one of my main tasks; to create that winning mentality and belief that every time a Manchester City player steps onto the pitch, we have a strong belief that we can win. That is something that we should build on and I’m pretty confident that we have capacity to do that.”
Manchester City’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Chelsea kicks-off at 7.30pm on Friday evening.
