Chelsea enter the international break with concerns mounting once again. Enzo Maresca’s second season in charge has already required heavy squad management and the latest setbacks underline how delicate the current balance has become. With key players missing and others nursing chronic issues, the situation is a test of depth and resilience.
Enzo Fernandez has withdrawn from Argentina duty after asking to be replaced in the 3-0 win over Wolves. He confirmed after the match that he has dealt with a long standing knee issue, saying he has had a “problem with my knee in the last four months.” The midfielder added that he “came with a bone edema that got worse in the last weeks and months because we played a lot of games.”

Argentina had only scheduled a friendly against Angola for 14 November, however the priority now is proper assessment at Cobham. Fernandez stated, “I will not be available with Argentina,” before outlining how the decision was taken in consultation with medical staff. No firm return date has been set, and Chelsea will hope rest stabilises the condition before the Premier League schedule intensifies.
Joao Pedro’s groin issue continues to trouble him and once again forced him off against Wolves. Maresca confirmed that the forward has been dealing with the same problem for several weeks and has been unable to train fully. The manager noted that Joao Pedro, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez all asked to come off, adding, “Because Pedro had a problem with his groin. And Enzo had a problem with his knee. So we need to see how they are now.”
Romeo Lavia also suffered another setback after going down clutching his thigh during a duel with Leandro Andrade. The midfielder left the pitch for further assessment and his frustration was clear. Since arriving from Southampton in 2023, he has featured in only 30 of Chelsea’s 130 competitive fixtures, and this fresh concern is another obstacle to establishing rhythm. His return date also remains unknown.
Cole Palmer’s creativity has been badly missed, with the playmaker making only four appearances this season. A persistent groin issue has not improved as quickly as first hoped. Maresca admitted his initial projection was off, saying, “I was wrong. Unfortunately, he needs to be out probably six more weeks.” He confirmed surgery is not required and expressed confidence in the recovery plan, noting that Palmer “looks relaxed” and is following all recommended therapy. A return in December is the working timeline.
Benoit Badiashile is also out until December after a muscle problem halted the encouraging progress he had shown on his comeback earlier in the campaign. Dario Essugo, who required surgery following an injury with Portugal Under 21s, is expected to return around January. The longest term absentee is Levi Colwill who ruptured his ACL in pre season and will not feature again until summer 2026.
Chelsea have now entered a critical period where recovery routines will shape their prospects. Maresca’s squad has shown signs of growing cohesion, however the volume of injuries continues to interrupt momentum. Navigating the coming weeks will depend on how quickly key players return and whether the medical team can stem the rising list of concerns.
