Conmebol president Alejandro Domínguez says the door remains open for Mexican clubs to rejoin the Copa Libertadores, though any return would rest with Concacaf.

According to Coluna Do Fla, Domínguez noted that Mexican sides took part until 2016 and said any comeback would have to be arranged through Concacaf, adding that Conmebol is open to partnership.

He added that the issue should be handled within Concacaf, stressing respect for other confederations, and called it an honour that teams from another confederation view the Libertadores as a reference.

Mexican participation ended in 2016. Cruz Azul, Tigres and Chivas were all runners-up, and the last Mexican finalist came in 2015 when River Plate beat Tigres.

If clubs from Mexico and the United States were included, Flamengo could face longer trips, shifts in time zones and testing conditions in parts of the United States.
