Corinthians edge ABC Camp-EQU in OT, lead Copa Sul-Americana group 🏀

On the night of Friday, the 24th, Corinthians made their debut in the South American Basketball League (LSB), the second largest continental men’s basketball competition. Playing at the Wlamir Marques Gymnasium, the Alvinegro hosted ABC Camp from Ecuador, and after a closely contested game throughout all four quarters, the match was decided in overtime, with Timão winning 96 x 89.

With this result, the People’s Team leads Group C of the competition, hosted in São Paulo, tied on points (two) with Quimsa from Argentina, but ahead on basket difference. The Argentine team will be Corinthians’ last opponent in this stage, in a game that takes place this Sunday, the 26th. Before that, the team faces the other group member, Defensor Sporting from Uruguay, this Saturday, the 25th. Both games will be held at Wlamir Marques.

Coach Jece Leite started Corinthians’ continental debut with a lineup consisting of Davaunta Thomas, Elyjah Clark, Victão, Elinho, and Gabriel Novaes. Among the substitutes were Tico Faria, Rafael Munford, Lucas Cauê, Kauan Raymundo, Kaique, Lucas Cardoso, and Matheus Monteiro.

The match was very balanced in regular time, with Corinthians and ABC Camp alternating moments of superiority. In the first quarter, Timão managed to impose themselves and, with a balanced performance, won 25 x 14, opening up a good lead. However, after a hard-fought second quarter, where the Ecuadorians won 21 x 19, reducing Alvinegro’s lead to nine points, the visiting team came back from halftime much stronger.

This superiority was quickly reflected on the scoreboard, with ABC turning the game around in the first minutes of the third quarter, which they won 31 x 19, thus holding a partial lead of 66 x 63. In the final ten minutes, however, Corinthians drew strength from the fans present at Wlamir Marques and gradually recovered, taking the game to overtime after tying 84 x 84 in regular time.

Overtime was similar to the first quarter, with Corinthians once again imposing themselves, quickly opening up a safe lead which they managed in the final moments. The 12 x 5 win in overtime resulted in a final score of 96 x 89 for Alvinegro in their LSB debut.

The standout player for Alvinegro was Davaunta Thomas, the game’s top scorer with 30 points, followed by Elyjah Clark, who added another 20 points for Alvinegro. Elinho, in turn, was also crucial, scoring 12 points and leading in rebounds and assists, with nine and eight respectively.
