FC Bayern advance to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup, but instead of rejoicing, many supporters are also angry – especially about one man: Leon Goretzka
In a match that was supposed to make positive headlines, the 30-year-old midfielder became the focus of criticism. „We could have brought Berni instead of Goretzka – he would have had just as much influence on the game,“ one fan posted in English on X. He also shared a picture showing the Bayern professional’s sobering figures in the 3:2 win against Union Berlin: seven touches of the ball, four passes in the opponent’s half – two of which were received
Goretzka came into the game in the 49th minute when Aleksandar Pavlovic had to drag himself off the pitch injured. It remains to be seen how serious the injury will be, but what followed was a half to forget – at least from the point of view of many fans. „He played 45 minutes and had SEVEN successful passes – as a central midfielder!“ commented one user sarcastically. Goretzka had already put in weak performances in previous games when he was given minutes of action
Instead of Goretzka, we could’ve brought on Berni and he would’ve had the same impact on the game.–
The voices online grew louder and louder as the evening progressed – and more biting. „Why is he still getting playing time, honestly?“ asked one stunned user. Another wrote: „It’s a mystery to me why they didn’t bring Bischof instead of Goretzka.“ There was also plenty of humor, or was it pure frustration? „Berni would at least be funny to watch, Goretzka just brings tears to your eyes,“ read another comment
Coach Vincent Kompany had explained before the game that he makes his decisions based on current form. In the hierarchy on the double-six, Pavlović has recently been clearly ahead of Goretzka. „If someone plays more, it’s a question of current form,“ said the Belgian before the cup game in Berlin. But with the 21-year-old’s injury, Goretzka could now get more playing time again – much to the displeasure of some fans
The name Tom Bischof came up particularly often in the criticism. The 20-year-old talent sat on the bench for 90 minutes against Union, while Goretzka was once again given preference. „I’m starting to get the feeling that Bischof is being used exclusively as a left-back. That’s probably how he’ll train, but you can still throw him in on the double six if your alternative is Goretzka,“ said one fan, summing up his disappointment
Statistically speaking, Goretzka’s performance in Köpenick was barely noticeable: no shots on goal, no dribbles, no tackles won – the Sofascore rating: 6.5
Whether he will be on the pitch again in the upcoming match against Stuttgart will probably also depend on how seriously Pavlovic is injured. The fans would have obviously made their decision long ago.
