According to Swiss outlet SFM Football, the Sky Blues have made an official approach to sign the 19-year-old ahead of the January transfer market.

The Sky Blues are enjoying a strong first half of the campaign under Frank Lampard, and are currently leading the way at the top of the Championship table.

Coventry have scored 50 goals from their opening 18 fixtures, and have a 10 point lead over second place Middlesbrough, putting them in a comfortable position in their bid to earn promotion to the Premier League.

The club reached the play-offs in two of the last three seasons, but missed out on a top flight return with defeats to Luton Town in the final and Sunderland in the semi-finals, as they eye a place in the division for the first time since 2002.

Coventry have reportedly made an offer to Swiss side Servette FC for the young Portuguese player, as they look to bolster their options in the new year.

The Sky Blues are understood to be keen on a deal for the teenager, but no agreement has yet been reached with the Super League side.

The Championship side are believed to be pushing to get the deal over the line, as they target a young talent with a lot of potential.

Varela made his breakthrough into the Servette first team squad last season, featuring 14 times in the Super League, including five starts.

He’s made a further seven appearances so far in this campaign, contributing a total of three goals from his 21 games in the side.

The wide forward has also earned a call-up to the Portugal U20 side, leaving a strong impression with his recent performances.

It remains to be seen whether Coventry can convince Servette to sell, with the January window set to open in just a few weeks.

Keyan Varela signing has potential for Coventry

A deal for Varela could prove a shrewd bit of business, as he will provide some potential to this Coventry side.

He will be a long-term project, and may not have too big of an immediate impact, but he clearly has talent that the Sky Blues want to add to their squad.

This also shouldn’t be too expensive of a deal to complete, making it an ideal piece of transfer activity to engage in this January.

Given their position in the table, they can afford to take a risk on an unproven talent, as the upside could be quite high if he adapts quickly to English football and lives up to some of his potential in the long run.
