Coventry City have been told do make a move for Josh Windass from Sheffield Wednesday to strengthen their squad.
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Coventry City have been told that Josh Windass would be a smart signing, even if they don’t necessarily need the Sheffield Wednesday attacking midfielder.
It’s well-documented that the Owls are facing EFL sanctions due to their poor financial situation, as they wait for a takeover to end Dejphon Chansiri’s time at Hillsborough.
Even though there is optimism a takeover is close, there are still major doubts over several players at the club, including Windass, who was Wednesday’s top scorer in the Championship last season, finding the net 13 times, as well as registering five assists.
It has been reported previously that Windass is one of the players to have informed the club he wants to depart after Chansiri failed to pay wages on time in the past two months.
The former Wigan man has been a consistent performer over the years, so it’s no surprise clubs are looking to capitalise on his potential availability.
Rangers are keen on a move for their former player, with Coventry and Norwich also thought to be in the mix for his signature.
The 31-year-old is capable of playing as an attacking midfielder and various other roles in the final third, so his versatility could appeal to Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard.
When asked by FLW about the prospect of bringing Windass to the CBS Arena, our Coventry fan pundit, Chris Deez, was adamant the club have to look at signing a player of that quality if they can, although he acknowledged it would add to the already fierce competition for places in midfield and attack.
“I like Josh Windass a lot. I think any fan of any Championship club appreciates how good he is, and he has extensive Championship experience.
“Sheffield Wednesday are in a crazy position at the minute, where it looks like their best players could be leaving.
“As much as I like Windass, my only concern is that he’s not going to be far off 32 during the season. We’re building and developing a young, hungry squad, and, as good as Windass is, we’re already trying to fit in Grimes, Sheaf, and Kai Andrews is apparently going to get opportunities, and Torp will be coming back after his injury last season.
"Obviously, we’ve got Rudoni and Allen as well. So, I’m not sure that we need Windass, but if we could pick him up on a free, with all of his experience, and everything he could help with, then absolutely, you’ve got to jump at the chance to take somebody like that.
“I’d like to think the pull of Lampard would be enough to get him to come here, but it’s obvious most clubs in the league would take him, especially on a free. Any of the teams that have come down from the Premier League could probably find a place for him in their starting XI, and they’d probably pay him a lot more than we can.
“So, we’ll wait and see what happens. It’d be a really good move if we could pull it off, but I won’t be too upset if we don’t.”
As outlined above, Windass is someone who is proven in the Championship, so if he is available on a free, or even for a knockdown price, there is always going to be interest.
There is a valid debate as to where exactly he would fit into Lampard’s Coventry side, but the fact is that the manager would welcome another talented player, and he would back himself to find a formula that works.
Over the course of the season, you need players to step up, and if Coventry could add someone like Windass, who has shown he is capable of getting into double figures for goals, it would give them another major attacking threat.
