Daniel Farke says he is not planning to let Illan Meslier leave in January, but accepts his stance could shift if a player asks to go.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Meslier has not played this season after being dropped for the final seven games of last term’s Championship run-in following errors. Karl Darlow replaced him and now sits behind Lucas Perri, leaving Meslier third choice.
The 25-year-old stayed in the summer despite the likelihood of missing matchday squads, featuring on the bench only when Perri or Darlow are absent. His deal expires at the end of the season, so January is the last chance for a fee, and any departure would hinge on the player initiating it.
Farke insists he rates Meslier highly, describing him as very young for a keeper with substantial Championship and Premier League experience, and a pleasure to work with. He added that recent injury and illness mean all goalkeepers are needed, and he is not proactively changing that department.
Leeds want to strengthen next month, although any permanent signing would require a sale before 30 June or another financial lever. Managing director Robbie Evans said in September the club are already at the limit of permitted three-year losses under Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
Leeds will look to explore the loan market for short-term additions. A creative right winger or No.10 remains a priority, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s growing influence makes additional cover for him increasingly important.
