Darwin Nunez is closing in on leaving Al-Hilal on loan with an option to buy running to June 2027, and his departure now appears a matter of time.

Sport reports his next destination could be the Portuguese league, with Porto and Benfica both seriously interested.

The striker is with Al-Hilal’s squad at their pre-season camp in Austria and is pushing hard to go, having already secured initial approval from the hierarchy for a loan.

He first asked to have his contract terminated. A compromise followed, he would forgo part of his salary and Al-Hilal would cover part of his dues for one season.

Nunez wants a return to Europe with a club competing for trophies. His representatives have offered him to Barcelona in recent days and the Catalans examined the option.

Benfica is the route he favours, having excelled there after a 25 million euros move from Almeria, before joining Liverpool for a fee exceeding 75 million euros. All parties reportedly want a resolution before 3 August, when Al-Hilal are due back in Saudi Arabia.

He struggled to adapt in the Premier League and has not found stability in Saudi Arabia. Atalanta and Besiktas made offers, but no agreement was reached, and Barcelona’s interest remains only a proposal.
