Gianluigi Donnarumma said the Italy squad wants to ‘write new pages in the history books’ with Gennaro Gattuso, as the coach reveals why his mother is blocking the Museum of Calcio.

The Azzurri delegation visited the Nuovo Museo del Calcio exhibit in the Coverciano training camp this evening, ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Israel.

“We do feel a lot of responsibility, as there is so much great history behind us,” Donnarumma told reporters.

“We must give our all to write new pages in the history books and we hope to write many of them along with the coach. This is what I hope.

“This is a fantastic museum, it gives me goosebumps.”

The space contains artefacts from the history of the Italy squad, including items from the four different World Cup victories.

Those were in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006, with Gattuso part of the squad that won the most recent edition.

Speaking to reporters, the former midfielder confessed he was meant to provide a memento from that 2006 tournament in Germany, but there is someone man-marking it better than any defender.

“I promised to bring my boots from 2006, but my mother has them in Calabria and she won’t let anyone reach them,” said Rino.

“It is emotional to be here, because there are so many wonderful memories.”
