Dundee 1-2 Celtic – Three Precious Points and Down the Road

Three precious points and down the road. It wasn’t pretty but we asked for a win by any means necessary and that is exactly what Celtic delivered at Dens Park yesterday afternoon…

It was a tough watch once yet again, but we achieved what we set out to do, and that was to win the three points which puts us just three points behind leaders Hearts who dropped two points earlier in the day at Livingston.

We got off to the perfect start when a combination of Yang and Benjamin Nygren contrived to bundle the ball into the back of the net with only eight minutes on the clock, with replays showing the goal be credited to the South Korean.

The goal seemed to lift the players, and only a combination of bad decision making and woeful finishing denied us a second goal in a first half that Celtic dominated. Had we had a striker of any note upfront then we would have been well out of sight by the break.

However, similar to previous games we seemed to fall off, and let the opposition back into the game, with only a lack of cutting edge from the hosts, the only reason VilJami Sinisalo was rarely tested in the visitors goal.

As always a one goal lead is never enough, and so it proved as Dundee equalised courtesy of the penalty spot after Colby Donovan was guilty of a handball offence in the box. We could have no complaints about the decision.

It looked as if a draw was on the cards, and yet more dropped points, but thanks to an instinctive finish by substitute Kelechi Iheanacho with eight minutes left of regulation time, we snatched all three points.

The Nigerian striker (brought in by Brendan Rodgers after Michael Nicholson messed up the summer transfer window by failing to sign a striker to replace Kyogo who was sold in January) gave our powderpuff attack much more impetuous from the moment he arrived on the park, and proved to be the difference in the end.

Celtic now has four home games left and only two away with both Hearts and the Rangers having to come to Paradise. In the matches before the split Celtic play St Mirren on Saturday at Celtic Park with Hearts taking on Motherwell at Tynecastle. It’s the Rangers to play last with their tough away game against Falkirk on Sunday lunchtime.

Celtic should take care of our own business and watch with interest what happens elsewhere. If Martin O’Neill’s side wins that the Rangers will go to Falkirk back in third place once again trailing Celtic.

A Celtic, Motherwell and Falkirk treble would do us perfectly but the main thing is for us to take care of our own business.

We are back in contention and now are essentially six wins away from the title.
