Sunderland face a pivotal summer on contracts as their Premier League return nears its conclusion, with a key decision looming on Lutsharel Geertruida after his loan.
According to Sky Sports Germany, internal clarity has been reached that Geertruida will not remain at Sunderland beyond this summer, and the €23m option will not be activated. He is expected to return initially to RB Leipzig, while a permanent move elsewhere is being explored amid interest in Europe’s top leagues.
The Netherlands international has been a steady presence across his season at the Stadium of Light after joining on loan from Leipzig last summer.
As things stand, he is among eight players set to depart at the end of the season when deals expire. The group comprises Simon Moore, Bertrand Traore, Geertruida on loan, Dennis Cirkin, Harrison Jones, plus loanees Niall Huggins, Zak Johnson and Dan Neil.
Beyond those decisions, a number of squad members are under contract into 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030, with several currently out on loan.
