Eliezer Mayenda could move this summer, with leading European clubs interested as he considers his next step. Sunderland Echo reports that Sunderland must balance the striker's ambitions with their wider plans.
The affection is mutual, but Brian Brobbey's Netherlands display against Sweden, and his World Cup form, suggest the pecking order will not change soon. At 21, Mayenda wants regular football, and interest from Stade Rennais, who will be in Europe next season, is appealing.
Two factors leave Sunderland open to a sale. Florent Ghisolfi, who has replaced Kristjaan Speakman, is ready to move on players who would rather be elsewhere, and the new Squad Cost Ratio rules make meaningful sales hard to ignore.
Under SCR, clubs can spend 70% of revenue on first-team costs in Europe, 85% if not, with amortised transfer fees feeding a three-year calculation.
Sales can create headroom to invest. Permanent exits for Mayenda and Anthony Patterson could be considered, with academy graduates counted as pure profit in SCR terms. Mayenda cost £1 million from Sochaux in 2023, and a sale could bring at least 10 times that.
A loan could suit Sunderland after glimpses of promise last season, even if not Mayenda's preference. With the rebuild only just starting, Wilson Isidor's situation uncertain and pre-season still to come, Ghisolfi faces a tough call, and Mayenda is prepared to move if it advances his career.
