Good camp for Phil Foden and Nico O’Reilly but Morgan Rogers suffers setback in bid to seal World Cup spot

England enjoyed a perfect end to World Cup qualifying by beating Serbia and Albania.

England did just that, while they also kept up their record of not conceding during qualifying.

Tuchel can now start focusing on next summer and the England boss has just two more friendlies in March before he names his squad.

Here, Standard Sport look at some of the winners and losers from last week’s games…

Winners

Jude Bellingham

The pressure was on Bellingham to deliver after he was left out of the squad for the two October games.

He was named on the bench for the Serbia win but did well when he came on and started the move that resulted in Eberechi Eze scoring.

Bellingham was duly handed a start in Albania and was voted man of the match by England supporters on social media.

Nico O’Reilly

The left-back spot in this England team is up for grabs and 20-year-old O’Reilly staked his claim by starting both games last week.

He performed well on debut against Serbia and was lively during the second half in Albania, combining well with Marcus Rashford when he came on.

If O’Reilly can stay ahead of Rayan Ait-Nouri in the pecking order at Manchester City, he will have a good chance of being England’s left-back for the friendlies in March.

Phil Foden

Like Bellingham, he had a point to prove after being overlooked for the October camp.

Foden was given the chance to play as a No9 and caught the eye off the bench against Serbia.

He star operated as a ‘false nine’ and Tuchel mentioned after the game how he can be an alternative to Harry Kane.

Foden also got minutes against Albania and he did so alongside Bellingham and Kane, which Tuchel had previously ruled out happening.

Losers

Myles Lewis-Skelly

The Arsenal teenager was omitted from this squad, with Tuchel stating that he needs more minutes.

Lewis-Skelly has had fierce competition at Arsenal this season, battling with Piero Hincapie and Riccardo Calafiori to be their left-back.

O’Reilly coming in and performing well for England will hurt Lewis-Skelly’s chances, but he has time to win his place back.

The fixture calendar is about to get very congested over the festive period, which should give the 19-year-old opportunities to impress Tuchel.

Morgan Gibbs-White

Left out of the squad for these games and now faces a fight to get back in.

Bellingham and Morgan Rogers look like the frontrunners to be England No10 and there is also the returning Cole Palmer to consider.

Gibbs-White needs to perform well before the next international break in March. The fact that he plays alongside Elliot Anderson at Nottingham Forest could help his cause.

Morgan Rogers

Tuchel showed faith in Rogers by starting him against Serbia, even though Bellingham was back in the fold.

But he had a quiet game and Bellingham was bright off the bench.

Bellingham got the nod in Tirana and performed well, and March’s friendlies promise to be an intriguing affair.

Rogers has plenty of credit in the bank under Tuchel - but it feels like the momentum has shifted towards Bellingham in the battle for No10.
