Everton suffered defeat in the first game at their Goodison Park home with The Toffees going down 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.

A new era began as Everton played host to Spurs in their first competitive game at Goodison Park since they were handed the keys in the summer. It was to be a tough afternoon for the Merseysiders with Olga Ahtinen and Cathinka Tandberg netting for the away side.

Everton started the game brightly and last weekend’s hat-trick hero, Ornella Vignola, almost opened the scoring for The Toffees, but she couldn’t get the ball under control.

At the other end, Amanda Nildén sent a dangerous delivery towards Tandberg, but Everton keeper Courtney Brosnan had everything under control and she caught the ball. Drew Spence then tried to tap the ball beyond Brosnan, but she managed to push it onto the post.

It was Spurs who opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark through Ahtinen. She pressed high up the pitch and fired the ball into the back of the net, beating Brosnan and becoming the first player to score at Everton’s new home in a competitive fixture.

Everton tried to respond and Maz Pacheco saw a free-kick held by visiting keeper Lize Kop before a Katja Snoeijs effort was blocked. Pacheco also failed to convert another opportunity as The Toffees went into the break behind.

Spurs doubled their lead not long after the second half whistle blew. Tandberg sent a shot towards goal from 40 yards out with Brosnan off her line and the ball flew perfectly into the back of the net.

Everton again looked to respond and Ruby Mace struck an effort from range, but it took a deflection and Kop managed to push the ball to safety.

Eveliina Summanen then had a chance to increase Spurs’ lead, but her effort was blocked as the scoreline ended 2-0.

Everton’s next Barclays Women’s Super League fixture is a home game against London City Lionesses while Spurs play host to Manchester City. Both games take place on Friday night.
