Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on Mason Burstow's decision to step down to League One this season
Sky Sports EFL pundit Lee Hendrie believes that Bolton Wanderers will be keen to sign Mason Burstow on a permanent basis from Hull City if he can maintain his good form to start the new season.
The forward has made a strong impression in the opening weeks of the new campaign, scoring key goals for the Whites after taking the step down to League One to join Steven Schumacher’s side.
Bolton will be hoping to fight for promotion this year, with their sights set on returning to the Championship for the first time since 2019.
Schumacher will be keen to see the 22-year-old maintain his level of goal scoring across the entire campaign, as that could be crucial to bridging the gap to the top six, after the club finished 10th in the table in the previous campaign.
Burstow has arrived from Hull, having struggled for regular game time with the Tigers, starting eight of his 31 appearances in the Championship last year.
Hendrie believes that Burstow might be starting to turn a corner in his career, praising his decision to take the step down to League One with Bolton after a difficult spell with Hull.
He’s claimed that the Whites will be keen to sign the forward on a permanent basis next summer if he can maintain his positive start to the new season, as long as the Tigers are open to a deal.
“I’ve sort of seen him get his loan moves and it hasn’t really hit off for him,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“I think this is the only time, you look at really where he’s started the season well at Bolton, obviously on loan, scoring goals.
“I think he’s got four in his last nine.
“You do start to think ‘is this where he’s going to turn a corner?’ just dropping down, getting his confidence back, playing games.
“This might be a big fit for him.
“It seems to be at this moment, with the start he’s had, and potential for what Bolton have in the future, maybe going forward.
“You’d think that, if this continues on, they’ll certainly want to make this a more permanent fixture.
“That’s if Hull allow it.”
Burstow spent time on loan in the Championship with Sunderland prior to his permanent switch from Chelsea to Hull last year.
The forward has made 51 appearances in the second division, scoring only three times.
He has already bettered that record at Bolton, having joined on loan this summer, which is an encouraging sign for his hopes of finding his footing in his career.
The decision to drop down to League One is proving a smart one for Burstow in these early stages of the season.
Hull will be pleased with the progress that he is making, and if he can keep this up then perhaps he’ll show that he can compete in the Championship.
If he can keep this up, then it will be a huge boost for Schumacher’s side given their promotion aspirations.
This has the potential to be a deal that works out well for all parties involved, based on how things have started so far this term.
