Manchester United midfielder Jack Fletcher has received a six match suspension after admitting to using discriminatory language during a match earlier this season. The Football Association confirmed the sanction following an investigation into an incident during United’s EFL Trophy defeat to Barnsley.
Fletcher, who has already taken early steps into the Man United first team, apologised publicly and accepted the punishment handed down by the governing body.
The incident occurred during Manchester United’s 5-2 defeat to Barnsley in October. Fletcher, an England Under 19 international and son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, was shown a red card in the 62nd minute.
At the time, the exact reason for the dismissal was unclear. The FA has now confirmed the teenager was sent off after calling an opponent “gay boy”, language deemed discriminatory under football regulations.
Fletcher addressed the situation directly after the decision was confirmed.
“I am truly sorry for the offensive word I used in the heat of the moment,” said Fletcher.
“I completely understand such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game.”
The young Man United midfielder also attempted to explain the circumstances around the comment.
Fletcher said a “momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values”.
He added that he “had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult”, a position acknowledged by the disciplinary commission. Even so, the commission concluded that a significant punishment was required.
The Football Association issued Fletcher with a six match ban, a decision accepted by both the player and Manchester United. In addition to the suspension, Fletcher must pay a £1,500 fine.
The FA has also instructed the 18 year old to complete a mandatory face to face education programme. Failure to complete the course would result in further suspension.
Written reasons published by the FA outlined that the comment followed a tense exchange during the match. According to the report, the opposing player had directed remarks at Fletcher and his family throughout the game.
Fletcher also told the hearing that earlier in the match he had been thrown to the ground and had his Achilles stamped on by the same opponent.
The match itself carried personal significance for the Fletcher family. Jack’s twin brother Tyler was also involved, while their father Darren watched from the stands.
Manchester United confirmed the club has been working with Fletcher since the incident to improve his understanding of discriminatory language.
United stated they have been helping the player “strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language and why it is harmful”. Fletcher will continue participating in club diversity programmes alongside the education required by the FA.
The club’s official LGBTQ+ supporters group, Rainbow Devils, also issued a response following Fletcher’s apology.
“Homophobic language has no place in football or society regardless of intention or connotation,” the group said.
“Words matter and words hurt.”
Fletcher has made three senior appearances for Man United so far, including his Premier League debut against Aston Villa in December. The case now stands as an early lesson in a young career that has only just begun.
