Charlton Athletic have significantly boosted their survival hopes by securing a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City at The Valley on Saturday.

Following their promotion to the Championship via the play-offs last season, Charlton were largely tipped as one of the favourites for relegation.

Led by the polarising figure that is Nathan Jones, the Addicks made numerous additions in the summer window to prepare them for the second tier, and whilst things have looked shaky at times, they’ve never really been in serious danger of dropping back into League One.

Their most recent victory over Birmingham has widened the gap between them and the bottom three by nine points with just 10 games to go, with safety well within their grasp now.

It’s a huge three points for Jones’ side, with one player seemingly enjoying the result slightly more than most.

How Lyndon Dykes reacted after Charlton’s win over Birmingham

Birmingham sought to revamp their attacking options in the last 12 months, with the likes of Marvin Ducksch, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Patrick Roberts all joining in the summer, whilst each of Carlo Vicente, Ibrahim Osman, and August Priske were brought in during the January window.

This saw an array of exits from St. Andrew's as a result, with a few more significant than that of Scotland international forward Lyndon Dykes, who incidentally joined Charlton to add experience to the Addicks forward area.

After Charlie Kelman’s goal sealed all three points for the home side, footage has emerged of Dykes celebrating after the game, seemingly ecstatic with the outcome of the game.

In the clip, the Aussie-born forward can be heard shouting ‘get in there’, followed by a loud celebratory noise directed towards the away dressing room, just to be certain that his former side had heard delight.

Dykes had struggled for game time over his two years with the Blues, with the bulk of his appearances in both League One and the Championship coming from the bench.

Now, with Charlton, the 30-year-old has nearly already matched his number of league starts with the Addicks as he did with Birmingham, emerging as a much more important figure in the English capital.

And whilst he failed to get on the scoresheet against his former club on Saturday, Dykes is seemingly enjoying his time at The Valley, as he looks to earn a place in Steve Clarke's FIFA World Cup squad for Scotland this summer.

Nathan Jones will be thrilled with Lyndon Dykes impact at Charlton Athletic after Birmingham switch

Dykes had very nearly returned to Scotland this summer with top-flight side Hibernian, though the move fell through late on, and he remained at Birmingham as a result.

He’d score a couple of late goals in the early stages of the campaign against the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City to earn the Blues all three points on both occasions in dramatic fashion.

However, his impact on games was limited to just a few minutes off the bench, and he would subsequently move on during the winter, landing at Charlton.

Since his return to the capital, having previously played for Queen’s Park Rangers, Dykes has found a new lease of life, with two goals and three assists in 11 league games thus far, already surpassing his direct goal output in the league across his 18 months with Birmingham.

He’s certainly let his feelings after victory against his former club be known, and fewer will be more pleased with his addition than head coach Jones, with Dykes potentially being the final piece of the puzzle to secure the Addicks’ status in the second tier for another year.
