Daryl Dike's strike against Preston provided an emotional moment in a stop-start West Brom stint that has tested him.

Days after missing a gilt-edged chance to win a Good Friday thriller at Wrexham, the striker came off the bench to bury Jayson Molumby's cut-back with Albion holding a slender lead. The player said in a post that “Worked so hard for that. Couldn’t be happier”.

It was a release after a long run of injuries since his £7m move from Orlando City. This season he battled back, used sparingly by Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay, then handed a bigger role by James Morrison with longer cameos and a handful of starts.

His celebration in front of the travelling support underlined the moment as Albion moved five points clear of the drop zone. Messages of support quickly arrived from team-mates Karlan Grant and Ollie Bostock, and a string of former colleagues.

Grady Diangana, now in Spain, and Cedric Kipre, on loan at Ipswich Town after a spell in France, added their praise. Callum Robinson, promoted to the Championship with Cardiff City, plus ex-vice captain Conor Townsend at Ipswich and Nathaniel Chalobah also weighed in.

Albion could potentially seal survival on Tuesday evening.
