Gareth Southgate’s position on potentially becoming the next Manchester United boss after Ruben Amorim has been revealed.

Amorim under increased pressure

Amorim is facing an extremely uncertain future at United amidst the team’s poor start to the 2025/26 season. United’s loss to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium marked their third defeat in six opening top-flight games.

The Red Devils’ performance against Keith Andrews’ men left a lot to be desired and there is pressure on Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the hierarchy to act before the campaign completely spirals out of control.

Amorim has picked up just 34 points from the 33 Premier League games he has taken charge of at United. He has managed a measly 27.2% win rate with his team scoring 39 goals in that period and conceding 53.

United are still believed to be backing Amorim but that faith will surely be tested if results and performances do not improve dramatically.

Last weekend, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Southgate is on United’s list of possible replacements for Amorim. It was even stated that Southgate had held meetings with Ratcliffe in recent weeks, although this claim was subsequently quashed.

It’s not the first time that the former England gaffer has been linked with the United job. He was an option for INEOS when they looking for successors to Erik ten Hag before they eventually elected to appoint Amorim.

Now, it has emerged that Southgate has no interest in becoming the next United head coach and would turn down an approach from the club if one came his way.

Southgate’s stance on United job

According to the Daily Star, “Gareth Southgate would reject an approach from Manchester United if Ruben Amorim is sacked.”

“It’s understood Southgate is in no rush to return to football, but continues to keep his options open.”

After leaving his post with England, Southgate has kept busy with motivational work, speaking engagements, and hosting shows. He has also been regularly spotted attending matches.

Meanwhile, it’s believed that Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner would relish the opportunity to take over the reins at Old Trafford.

Barcelona legend and former boss Xavi is also thought to be very keen on the job.
