The potential wages issued to Gianluigi Donnarumma by Manchester City have been speculated in a new report this week.
Donnarumma joined Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain for a reported £26 million on the final day of the summer transfer window, with Ederson completing a £12.1 million transfer to Fenerbahce after eight seasons in England.
City have played summer signing and academy graduate James Trafford in net for their opening three Premier League games, with Ederson’s future at the Etihad Stadium not resolved until deadline day.
Trafford is expected to battle Donnarumma for the number one goalkeeping position, with Manchester City insiders indicating that the latter is set to replace Ederson as the club’s starting shotstopper for the timebeing.
However, it is worth noting that City manager Pep Guardiola has publicly retained that a decision on his starting goalkeeper will be made as the season progresses, which is likely to witness both Donnarumma and Trafford receive ample opportunities to stake a claim for the number one position.
It remains to be seen which of the duo is chosen to guard the net in Manchester City’s upcoming trio of tricky tests against Manchester United, Napoli and Arsenal – upon the return the club action after the ongoing international break.
Donnarumma’s safe hands and a much stronger CV than Trafford’s could see the Italy international slot straight into the starting XI at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester United in a few weeks’ time, with City’s seventh summer signing set to travel to England after the international break.
With Ederson’s future at the Etihad Stadium unresolved into the final month of the recent transfer window, Manchester City identified Donnarumma as their preferred replacement for the Brazilian, agreeing personal terms with the former AC Milan man, who was looking for a new club after a public fallout with Paris Saint-Germain.
However, City were not the only interested party and as reported by The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, talks were held at Manchester United over the possibility of signing Donnarumma, but the Italian was ‘quickly ruled out’ over his wage demands.
The report claims that the 26-year-old wanted £13 million per year net – a figure that is said to be a ‘significant amount higher’ than Old Trafford captain, Bruno Fernandes.
While it remains unknown what Manchester City have sanctioned to Donnarumma and his representatives regarding a salary package, meeting his aforementioned demands issued to rivals United would make him the club’s fourth-highest earner, according to Spotrac data.
Manchester City have arguably the strongest pairing of goalkeepers in world football after their acquisitions of Trafford and Donnarumma, with the former expected to fight for minutes and learn from the latter, whose ball-playing ability has come into question since his move to the Etihad Stadium though.
