Granit Xhaka has voiced support for Romaine Mundle after Sunderland condemned alleged racist abuse aimed at the winger following Sunday’s Premier League match against Fulham at the Stadium of Light.

The club said it was appalled by vile online abuse and would work with authorities and platforms to identify those responsible, adding it would take the strongest possible action and that offenders are not welcome on Wearside.

Mundle endured a difficult afternoon, then deleted his Instagram account amid the fallout. Xhaka reposted Sunderland’s statement to his own account with a message questioning why such incidents persist and stressing that he stands with the 22-year-old, adding to dressing-room support.

The Premier League also condemned the abuse, warning of serious consequences for discrimination and pledging full support for the investigations. It reiterated that football is for everyone and there is no place for racism.

This is not the first time Mundle has been targeted. In February 2025, after a 1-0 home defeat to Hull City, he shared a screenshot of a discriminatory message and Sunderland restated its zero-tolerance stance, vowing to pursue the matter and to keep working with authorities, the EFL and social media platforms to protect players.

The club also urged Meta to remove harmful content more swiftly, while Wolverhampton Wanderers the same day condemned racist abuse of one of their players, highlighting the wider problem across the game.
