Chelsea’s Keira Walsh
Chelsea midfielder Keira Walsh knows exactly what it takes to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
She has won it twice with Barcelona, and she hopes to add another trophy with the Blues this season.
Sonia Bompastor’s side have a draw and a win in the competition so far – and they now face St Polten on Tuesday evening.
And Walsh has told her team-mates that no matter what the scoreline, they need to stay focused.
“In the Champions League, there are probably no easy games,” she said. “A lot of people don’t look at it like that, but even from my experience of playing at different teams, every team we face is difficult for different reasons.
“From my experience when I won at Barcelona, we were actually losing 2-0 in the final [but came back to win], so I thinkj that was a valuable experience in itself – knowing no matter how long of the game is left, you’ve got a chance to win. That is something we took through at the Euros [with the Lionesses] and something a lot of us can bring to this Chelsea team as well now.”
And Walsh also hailed Chelsea’s strength in depth, which she says is vital if they are finally to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League – a trophy that has eluded them, even when they have dominated domestically.
It will be particularly important on Tuesday as Livia Peng comes in for the injured Hannah Hampton – and Sonia Bompastor has hinted that there will be some squad rotation following Saturday’s draw against Arsenal in the Women’s Super League.
“We’re in a good place and it’s really important we’ve got competition [within the squad], that’s what you need at this stage,” she added.
“There are a lot of games in a lot of different competitions, so we’re in a good place. To have that [quality] in training as well makes it easier when you’re playing in the games afterwards.”
And asked whether she might add to her limited goalscoring tally, amidst much laughter she went on: “Sonia tells me to shoot all the time!
“I prefer to pass, I prefer to get an assist, so I think at times I overplay, but Sonia and Cami [assistant coach Camille Abily] are always telling me to shoot – and shoot on my left foot.”
