Gunners have opportunity to open Premier League advantage to 12 points

Arsenal host Bournemouth in the early Premier League kick-off this afternoon, with a big three points on the line.

After falling short in the Carabao Cup final and crashing out of the FA Cup against Southampton in consecutive matches, Arsenal got back to winning ways away at Sporting in midweek.

They left it late in Lisbon, with Kai Havertz scoring the decisive goal in injury time to give the Gunners a 1-0 lead heading into the second leg.

But for now, attention turns back to the Premier League title race, where they hold a nine-point advantage to second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

And with City facing a tricky match away at Chelsea on Sunday, the Gunners have every opportunity to open their title race advantage to a near-unassailable 12 points.

Their first task, though, will be to get past Andoni Iraola’s Cherries, and Mikel Arteta may be without several first-team players for the match.

He delivered a cryptic team news update at his pre-match press conference, simply saying that he expected ‘changes’ when asked whether the likes of Piero Hincapie, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori would be available.

Arteta may have to rely on some fringe players, then, as he chases an important three points.
