If Mac Allister Leaves, Alex Scott Could Be Liverpool’s Perfect Successor

Liverpool Would Need More Than a Replacement

The possibility of Alexis Mac Allister leaving for Real Madrid this summer remains speculative, but it is the type of situation that Liverpool’s recruitment team must prepare for. His performance level has dropped and the physicality needed for the coming seasons may be beyond a midfield controller once heralded as the best in the Premier League.

Should the Argentine depart, replacing him would not simply be about finding another talented midfielder. Liverpool would need somebody capable of growing into the role over several years whilst fitting the long-term vision of the club.

That is where Alex Scott becomes an intriguing option—a gifted English player who has blossomed under Adoni Iraola’s watch.

The young midfielder has continued to develop impressively at AFC Bournemouth and possesses many of the qualities that Liverpool should be targeting as they enter a new era.

Scott is technically gifted, comfortable receiving possession under pressure, and capable of progressing the ball through central areas. Unlike many younger midfielders, he combines creativity with a willingness to work without the ball.

That balance matters. The versatility to play all midfield variants is key, and should be seen as someone who can aid the new Liverpool manager.

Liverpool’s midfield has often lacked cohesion over the past season. Too frequently the central unit has appeared disconnected from both the attack and defence. Scott’s mobility and intelligence could help bridge those gaps.

At just 22 years old, he would also fit perfectly within the recruitment model that has served Liverpool so well over the years. Rather than spending enormous sums on an established superstar, the club would be investing in a player whose best years remain ahead of him.

Perhaps most importantly, Scott looks like a footballer capable of thriving within multiple systems.

Whether Liverpool moves toward a 4-3-3, a 4-2-3-1, or even a more fluid structure under a new coaching regime, his versatility would make him a valuable asset with a knowledge of how Iraola works.

The Type of Signing Liverpool Used to Make

One reason Scott appeals is that he feels like a traditional Liverpool signing.

Under the guidance of figures such as Michael Edwards, Liverpool built much of its success on identifying elite talent before the rest of the market fully appreciated its value.

Scott falls firmly into that category. He is not yet a global superstar. He is not a headline-grabbing Galáctico.

Instead, he is a highly talented young footballer whose trajectory suggests he could become something special in the right environment.

Liverpool would also be acquiring a player who understands the intensity of English football. There would be no adaptation period to the Premier League, no concerns about physicality, and no uncertainty about whether he could handle the pace of the competition.

If the new head coach arrives with ambitions of restoring energy, pressing, and aggression to Liverpool’s play, Scott would seem an ideal fit to follow him to Merseyside.

His willingness to run, compete, and contribute defensively complements his technical strengths. Those characteristics have often defined Liverpool’s best midfielders and defined roles may not be needed, merely a mixture of everything required.

Of course, replacing Mac Allister directly would be incredibly difficult given his impact. The World Cup winner brings leadership, experience, and a unique ability to control the rhythm of matches, yet his best years are now behind him and it’s difficult to imagine him being able to match the intensity needed.

No young player could be expected to replicate prime Alexis immediately.

However, recruitment is not always about finding the same player. Sometimes it is about identifying the next one.

If Liverpool were in favour of planning for life after Mac Allister, Alex Scott would deserve serious consideration. Young, technically excellent, tactically flexible, and already proven in the Premier League, he looks exactly the type of player capable of becoming a major figure at Anfield for years to come.
