Matteo Darmian broke the deadlock on the rebound after Filip Stanković had parried Lautaro Martínez's initial volleyed effort shortly after the quarter of an hour mark.
Stanković fared better against his parent club during the second half when he denied Davide Frattesi the chance to double his side's lead in a one-on-one.
The hosts' best chance fell to Gianluca Busio in the final 15 minutes as the midfielder's curling strike came back off Yann Sommer's far post.
But the Nerazzurri held on to close the gap to Serie A leaders Napoli to a solitary point.
