Gianpaolo Calvarese delivered his verdict on last night’s scandalous refereeing in a controversial Serie A clash between Inter Milan and Fiorentina.
Speaking to Tuttosport via FCInter1908, the former Serie A referee slammed Simone Sozza for two massive oversights.
Despite failing to find the net in the opening half an hour, Inter Milan put Fiorentina to hte sword last evening.
Indeed, Cristian Chivu’s charges put three unanswered goals past La Viola beyond the 60th minute, posting a huge 3-0 win.
Hakan Calhanoglu scored a match-winning brace, including a stunning close-range screamer to open the scoring.
Meanwhile, Petar Sucic netted his first-ever goal in Serie A in remarkable fashion to make it 2-0 just after the 70-minute mark.
However, Sozza’s controversial decisions reignited debate over refereeing standards in Serie A.
The 38-year-old refused to point to the spot on either side of halftime, even though he had every reason to award a penalty on both occasions.

“Simone Sozza had been refereeing really well this season, but he made a mess of Inter vs Fiorentina,” Calvarese said. “Two clear penalties were missing between the first and second half, both in favor of the Nerazzurri.
“Meanwhile, the referee from Brianza awarded only one – the correct one – late in the game.
“The key players in the two missed penalties were always the same: Pietro Comuzzo and Pio Esposito.
“In the first incident, the defender completely ignored the ball and repeatedly held his opponent with both hands, bringing him down.
“In the second, Comuzzo turned his back to the ball and wrapped his arm around Esposito’s neck, dragging him down.
“VAR official Ghersini remained silent in both cases, failing to call Sozza for an On-Field Review – another mistake.
“At the beginning of the match, there was another controversial moment involving a shove by Gudmundsson on Lautaro.
“Risky but mild, so allowing play to continue was a sustainable choice.
“The penalty awarded just before the 90th minute for Viti’s foul on Bonny was clear, as was the second yellow card for the former Empoli man.
“Sozza fared better in terms of disciplinary decisions.
“The first yellow for Viti was also correct, as was the one shown to Pio Esposito for a tackle from behind on Maleh.”
