Inter Milan are aiming to stop Man City striker Erling Haaland from equalling a goal record set by Cristiano Ronaldo with Real Madrid.
Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, note that the Norwegian could become the player to reach a hundred goals at a club in the fewest matches if he scores against Inter.
Inter will know that Manchester City are far more than just Erling Haaland.
The Nerazzurri found that out the hard way in the 2023 Champions League final.
In that match, Inter kept Haaland off the scoresheet, as he had one of his quietest matches in a City shirt.
But Inter lost the match anyway. It was midfielder Rodri who scored the only goal of a tight 1-0 victory for the Cityzens.
Nevertheless, there is no ignoring the fact that Haaland is City’s biggest threat.
The 24-year-old has scored a remarkable nine goals in just four matches for City at the start of the Premier League season.
That alone underlines just how hard it will be for Inter to stop Haaland a second time.
In a Premier League context, Haaland’s start to the season is record-breaking.
Previously, the most goals scored by a player in the first four matches of a Premier League season was eight. That record belonged to Wayne Rooney for Manchester United in the 2011-12 campaign.
But Haaland has broken that record.
And in a broader context, Haaland’s astonishing goal haul has brought his total for City to 99 goals since joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022.
The Norwegian has managed that in just 103 matches.
If Haaland hits triple digits tomorrow against Inter. It will be the fastest that a player has done so at a club in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
The record currently belongs to Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.
