Champions League action returns. After clashes against Ajax, Slavia Praga, Union SG, Kairat Almaty, Atlético Madrid, and Liverpool, Inter are back to face Arsenal in their first European game of 2026. The big showdown against the Gunners, in matchday seven of the league phase, is scheduled for Tuesday, 20 January at San Siro, with kickoff at 21:00 CET.
Inter will host Arsenal for the second consecutive year, after the Nerazzurri secured an important 1-0 victory in the 2024/25 League Phase thanks to a penalty from Hakan Çalhanoğlu. The only showdowns date back to the Champions League group stage in 2003/04, with each team winning one game. On 17 September, at the historic Highbury Stadium, Inter won 3-0 with goals from Cruz, Van der Meyde, and Martins. The match remains etched in our memories thanks to Van der Meyde's spectacular goal and Francesco Toldo's incredible performance, including a penalty save on Thierry Henry. Two months later, the return leg at San Siro saw a convincing win for the English side: 5-1. Vieri scored for Inter, while Henry secured a brace and Ljungberg, Edu, and Pires also scored for Arsenal.

Arsenal are on maximum points in the Champions League, with 18 points after a perfect European campaign so far. They have won against Atletico Bilbao, Olympiacos, Atlético Madrid, Slavia Prague, Bayern Munich and Club Brugge. The Gunners boast a +16 goal difference in this season’s UEFA Champions League, with 17 goals scored and just one conceded. Only one English side has a better goal difference after the first six matches of a single edition of the competition (since 1992/93): Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool in 2017/18 (+17, 23 goals scored and six conceded).
Gabriel Martinelli is Arsenal’s leading scorer this season with nine goals. The Gunners’ number 11 has found the net in all five of their UEFA Champions League matches so far (five goals in total) and could set a new record for the longest scoring streak by a Brazilian player in the competition. A goal in this match would see him reach six consecutive Champions League games with a goal, surpassing the five-match streaks previously set by Neymar (in 2015 and 2017) and Jardel in 1999.
Arsenal are top of the table in the Premier League, earning 49 points from 21 games, with 15 wins, two draws, and four defeats. They have scored 40 goals, and conceded 14. In the league, the Gunners are currently on a six-match unbeaten run (five wins and one draw) and boast the best defensive record in the competition.
