James McClean has left Wrexham for Derry City, thanking owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac after his sudden exit.
The 36-year-old's move, confirmed on Saturday after mutual termination of a deal running to summer 2027, followed a 2-1 home loss to Norwich City that halted four straight league wins. The player said in a post that the club handled his return with class and that the owners made his stay special.
McClean signed in August 2023, made 108 competitive appearances and scored eight goals. He captained the Red Dragons to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.
Minutes have been scarce this season and he had voiced frustration. He has chosen to resume his career in the League of Ireland Premier Division, with the club where he began.
Manager Phil Parkinson praised his captain, highlighting his drive, determination, mentality and professionalism, and wished him and his family well. He considered the timing right as McClean has long wanted to settle in his hometown and to finish his career there.
McClean also thanked staff across the club and supporters, and spoke of an exceptional bond in the dressing room. He will be joined at Derry by his younger brother, Patrick McClean.
