Bayern Munich booked their spot in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday.
The German champions struggled in the first half and saw Kim Min-jae sent off in the 63rd minute, yet Harry Kane’s second-half goals were enough to secure the victory.
The England captain opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, heading Michael Olise’s corner past goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen. Just three minutes later, Kane was fouled in the box and converted the resulting penalty to give Bayern a 2-0 cushion.
Kane’s two strikes were his 25th and 26th Champions League goals for Bayern, moving him past Arjen Robben into fourth place on the club’s all-time UCL scorers list. Ahead of him are Gerd Müller (34), Thomas Müller (57) and Robert Lewandowski (68).
Bayern remained largely in control even after Kim Min-jae received a second yellow card for pulling Raul Florucz, reducing the hosts to ten men. Union were unable to take advantage, leaving the German side to manage the remainder of the match comfortably.
Kane had a chance to complete a hat-trick late in the game when a second penalty was awarded following a handball by Kamiel Van de Perre. His effort, however, struck the crossbar, ending his streak of eight consecutive successful penalties in the 2025-26 season. This was Kane’s second penalty miss of the calendar year, after an earlier miss in the DFB-Pokal, though his Bundesliga penalty record remains perfect.
Wednesday’s win marked Bayern’s 250th victory in Europe’s premier club competition. It also guaranteed their place in the knockout rounds, with Arsenal the only other team to have already secured a top-eight finish in the group stage.
