The 25-year-old’s first El Clásico didn’t go as he had hoped, as Real Madrid suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat to FC Barcelona on October 26 at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

He certainly drew attention, but not for the best reasons. The match stayed scoreless until the 31st minute when Mbappé thought he had put Madrid ahead, only for VAR to rule the goal offside.

Offside calls plagued the former Paris Saint-Germain star throughout the game, flagged eight times—a LaLiga record for a single match over the past decade, according to StatMuse on X.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid watched Barcelona erupt for four second-half goals. Veteran striker Robert Lewandowski scored twice in quick succession, netting in the 54th and 56th minutes. Lamine Yamal followed up with a goal in the 77th, and Raphinha wrapped things up with one in the 84th.

Mbappé’s offensive contributions have been underwhelming, and now his defensive efforts are coming into question as well. According to a report from Spain, some Real Madrid players are frustrated with his limited involvement in defense, feeling that he only engages once the ball crosses midfield. They’re hoping he’ll begin to see the bigger picture.
