Late draw in Bielefeld: BVB women concede in injury time

After the confident 9-0-win against GSV Moers, the BVB women under head coach Markus Högner only had one day to prepare for their opponents from Bielefeld. In the build-up to the game, Högner told his team to expect an intense game, which would be played with a good defensive structure, effective pressing and courageous attacking play. For the match, the head coach rotated his starting lineup and relied on his team from the cup game on Monday, with two exceptions. Mia Böger replaced the injured Jenske Steenwijk in defence and Ronja Leubner took Frederike Kempe’s place in the starting lineup.  In the first meeting of the two sides since the Black & Yellows’ 3-0 success in the Westfalenpokal semi-final in April, the Borussia women started on the front foot. Enjoying more possession of the ball, the BVB women created the first chances with a set piece and a Rita Schumacher shot in the opening stages. As the game wore on, neither side allowed their opponents much, and the game progressed without any clear goal chances for either side until the BVB opener in the 43rd minute. It was Ann-Sophie Vogel who had started on the left side and worked her way the by-line and cut the ball back precisely for Dana Marquardt. The striker headed confidently into the bottom right corner for a narrow lead for the BVB women at the break. Both sides remained unchanged as they came out for what was a more active second half. With more willingness to run, the Black & Yellows pressed higher up the pitch and thus increased the pressure on an uncomfortable Bielefeld back line. On 67 minutes, the Black & Yellows came up with the best chance yet to double their lead to 2-0. Jasmin Jabbes easily broke through down the left and once again crossed dangerously into the opposition’s six yard box. The Bielefeld goalkeeper did brilliantly to scrape the floated header from goalscorer Dana Marquardt off the line. At the other end, Laura van der Laan preserved BVB’s the narrow lead with an excellent save of a long-distance shot in the 85th minute. Until the third minute of the injury time, the BVB women successfully defended their box against Bielefeld set pieces. And it wasn't until the 93rd minute, that Bielefeld’s Susanne Werner’s header found its way into the BVB goal and earned a late point for the home side. It was a draw that only the Bielefeld women will be happy about in the end. It leaves both teams level on 13 points from seven games in the Regionalliga West table. For BVB women, after three games in the space of a week, they will now return to their usual rhythm, taking on DJK Wacker Mecklenbeck in the Rote Erde next Sunday (12 October, kick-off: 15:00 CET). Tickets for the home match on Matchday 8 are available in the online ticket shop. The game will also be broadcast live and free of charge on Pluto TV.BVB women: Van der Laan – Wöhrn, Reimann (Kempe, 64), Böger – Vogel, Ito, Leubner (Baum, 82), Jabbes, Schumacher (Günnewig, 64), Enderle - MarquardtGoals: 0-1 Marquardt (43), 1-1 Werner (93)Mirko Hase
