Sunderland have not ruled out a late loan for Chris Rigg as the January window enters its final stages, with Régis Le Bris keeping both possibilities on the table. According to Sunderland Echo, a final decision will come once the squad picture is clear at the deadline.
Rigg, 18, has 11 appearances across all competitions in his first Premier League season. He played 90 minutes for the U21s in a defeat to Borussia Dortmund this week to maintain fitness.
With key players, including fellow midfielder Habib Diarra, returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Sunderland are weighing whether regular minutes elsewhere would help Rigg more than daily work in their elite environment. Le Bris said the choice depends on the final make-up of his squad.
The club could still permit several departures before the window shuts, an hour before they face Burnley at the Stadium of Light. One option under consideration is signing Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, which could allow Anthony Patterson to leave on loan.
Le Bris said discussions remain open for players who need minutes and that nothing is official, stressing any move must suit both the club and the player. He added the mood is positive, no one is pushing to leave, and opportunities can change quickly for those on the fringes.
